Wine box packaging is gaining popularity within the wine industry, because of its advantages for both the manufacturer and end-user. A common misconception that wine packaged in a box would be inferior in quality to its counterpart in bottles, is simply not true these days. Users are becoming more aware of sustainability issues, and more often opting to choose the box over the bottle.
The wine is stored in a plastic bladder inside the cardboard box which virtually eliminates air from having contact with the wine. Unlike an opened bottle of wine, box wine will stay fresher longer once it is opened. It’s also thought to be more eco-friendly than bottle and cork, as a shipment of wine boxes weighs less than a glass bottle shipment. But maybe the biggest reason for box wine is gaining popularity is its practicality in social gatherings. No need to lug around heavy glass bottles, or be scared of broken glass, as you can get more of the same good thing in a lighter, safer package.
Unsurprisingly, along with the growing popularity, the amount of new, stylish box wine packaging designs we are seeing is skyrocketing. The whole visual, material and structural language of boxed wine differs from traditional wine labels, but not just for their obvious size difference, but because of the expanding number of options and opportunities the new format offers. Endless design, paper, and printing technique options are inspiring, and attractive for a designer and producer alike.
Minkov Brothers Before & After wine box packaging printed on Via Felt
The Minkov Brothers Winery, a small quality wine producer in Venets, Bulgaria, has praised this new packaging opportunity. The winery is part of SIS Industries Ltd., one of the largest owners of vineyards and producers of wine and spirits in Bulgaria. The Minkov Brothers wines are world-renowned and have won numerous awards from some of the most prestigious wine competitions in the world.
The packaging for the Before & After box wine collection was designed in-house, with the design reflecting all the little things of our everyday life that ultimately build the threads of our lives.
The Before & After wines were born from the idea that every moment of our lives has a before and an after. That these two moments are inseparably linked. The packaging for the wine collection was designed in-house, with the design reflecting all the little things of our everyday life. Minkow Brothers chose to use Via Felt Flax 220gsm (exclusively available at Europapier) for the packaging because it’s unique characteristics – recycled fibers can be seen in the paper’s texture – additionally to its luxurious, yet traditional felt surface. The wonderful line of wines, which include a red, white, and a rose, are suited for now, for before and also for the moment after.
The concept of Before & After is closely related to the philosophy of the Minkov Brothers Winery, highly valuing the connection between traditions, modern practices, and future vision in the development of the winery.
