Each year at Christmas, the Libri bookstore in Budapest Hungary organizes a charity program that includes a magical window display for the joy and amazement of their customers and all festive holiday shoppers. Following last year’s success, the Hungarian paper visionary and creative Edina Németh and her dedicated team of Edinas Paper, has created a stunning display that is fully made of paper, showcasing the intricate level of skill needed, as well as the possibilities and potential of the beloved material.
Edinas Paper and MeetLab collaborate to create a Christmas miracle, making the impossible possible
Anticipating something great after last year’s enchanted display inspired by the world of Hans Christian Andersen, showcasing a crystal white, detailed winter scenery including a flying swan, the ugly duckling and the Thumbelina sleeping in a nutshell, this year a new surprising element was added to the amazement of viewers. Commissioned by BOLD Budapest, Edinas Paper together with kinetic designers of MeetLab created an incredible Christmas miracle time machine installation which includes the magic of movement.
The bold task of designing the intertwining paper elements with the mechanical parts of the installation proved to be challenging, but not impossible. As a result, a magical time machine full of details and moving elements takes the viewer back to their childhoods when Christmas miracles were real. This feeling of discovery and making the impossible possible translates from the maker’s journey to the people enjoying the final design.
The time machine starts a domino effect that turns back time, highlighting special editions of Magda Szabó and Endre Ady
The display highlights two very famous Hungarian authors, Magda Szabó and Endre Ady. And when you insert either of their special edition books, the installation becomes alive. See the video below of the installation in action. The time machine starts moving, going through several different stations, starting a domino-effect of books that guide the viewer’s eye from right to left.
A magical time machine full of details and moving elements takes the viewer back to their childhoods when Christmas miracles were real.
And that is the moment when the slowly turning clock starts turning back the hands of time. The clock startles the paper plane that travels through the planets, which on its turn sparks a light movement, guiding our eyes back towards the case where the book has been placed.
This way the time machine reaches its final stage where the unexpected magic happens: the signature of the late author of your choice is written on the pages of your special edition book. Creating a magical moment!
Black and gold papers emphasize exclusiveness and the antique feel of the time machine
The installation has many other exciting moving elements, that are not part of the time machine process but are present to catch the eye of the passersby. Such as turning cogwheels, and planets combined with letters or words highlighted from the literary works of the authors. Next to the case the letters of Christmas miracle twist and turn, and the play between the graphical elements of the machine and the quotes, while the layered structure produces an interesting 3D effect, creating a world of wonder and play. See the video below of the installation of the display and the making-of.
The choice of paper was to emphasize the exclusiveness of the installation and the golden and black details were designed in order to enhance the antique feel of the time machine. The strength of BLACK 350 gsm and 700 gsm papers are combined with the smoothness of the shimmering surfaces of the Galaxy Metallic Sun Gold papers – both exclusively available at Europapier.
Leaving us feeling nothing short of amazement, we urge everyone capable to go see and experience the paper installation yourself, by visiting the Libri Bookstore at Váli utca 3. in Budapest.
