Authors’ Boras: a Collection of Short Stories Printed on Transparent Glama Basic

Studio Sonda, an independent creative studio for design and communications based in Vizinada Croatia, is the designer of Authors’ Boras, a beautiful book published by Rijeka 2020 and V.B.Z., and edited by Kruno Lokotar. Authors’ Boras is a collection of short stories that tell the tales of authentic Kvarner experiences through the words and thoughts of sixteen authors, selected by Željka Horvat Čeč: Faruk Šehić, Dorta Jagić, Milena Benini, Vladimir Arsenijević, Lejla Kalamujić, Nora Verde, Robert Perišić, Enver Krivac, Edo Popović, Asja Bakić, Olja Savičević Ivančević, Damir Karakaš, Tea Tulić, Bekim Sejranović, Zoran Žmirić, and Josip Novakovich.

A collection of short stories of sixteen authors’ authentic Kvarner experiences

As part of the project Rijeka European Capital of Culture, 16 writers spent one spring month in the Kvarner area and its islands, separately, each one of them at a different location. The Kvarner Gulf, a bay in the northern Adriatic Sea, located between the Istrian peninsula and the northern Croatian Littoral mainland, is beloved by locals and tourists alike for its stunning scenery and unique atmosphere. 

And here, at sea, the blowing Bora (wind in eng.) often breaks seawater into tiniest droplets and foam, creating a thin, misty layer, a so-called “smoking sea”. And in the unique environment of the Kvarner Boras, the authors’ “boras” were created, becoming a collection of sixteen short stories of the authors’ authentic Kvarner experiences.

Creating an emotional and physical experience of the Bora with transparent Glama Basic paper

The design of Authors’ Boras seeks to evoke the emotional and physical experience of the Bora. The text is printed on transparent Glama Basic paper, in such a way that the letters overlap and irresistibly resemble watery dust caused by the Bora at sea. But turning the page brings the necessary clarity and allows reading, which is also very characteristic of the Bora – known to be the mind-clearing wind.

The cover is printed on Glama Basic 150gsm for a sturdier feel, while the core is Glama Basic 90 gsm and Pergraphica Natural Rough 100 gsm, both papers exclusively available at Europapier.

The design of Authors’ Boras seeks to evoke the emotional and physical experience of the Bora. The uncoated, transparent Glama Basic is the perfect choice for Author’s Boras, creating a unique haptic and visual experience for the reader. Made from chlorine-free bleached cellulose, Glama Basic has a pleasant, smooth surface, making it suitable for high-quality printed projects that aspire for an out-of-the-ordinary look. The interesting aspect is that the print is left open to imagination, it is see-through but not fully obvious and only discovered thoroughly when the page is turned.
