Designer, paper crafter, and lettering artist Matisse Hales captured our attention with her delightfully soft, harmonious, and masterfully produced paper artworks. The artist, named after Henry Matisse, who also worked with paper-cut work, creates charming paperwork in which the Utah-based creative combines her love for both the art of lettering and paper crafting.
Matisse Hales’ paper art spreads positivity and delight
With a degree in both Russian and Graphic Design, Hales follows in the footsteps of her graphic designer father, and even once studied and worked at a small creative studio in Moscow, Russia, where she managed to blend her two passions.
A true believer in working through hardship, Hales aims to create something every day. Her work begins with sketching, drawing inspiration from various sources, including books, beautiful colors, museums, interior design, nature, letters, and more. Her process focuses on finding balance in both shapes, composition, and colors, with the final paper cut work being done by hand – in precise, clean style. What feels uniquely characteristic in Hales’ work, is the light, harmonious color schemes, and drive for seeing things in a positive light. A message that seems to be the red thread throughout the artist’s portfolio. A rarity in these modern days.
