Russian designer Lilia Makarova is a specialist in the field of spatial prototyping, as she masters all kinds of modeling techniques from paper to cardboard and beyond. Besides understanding the dimensions and volumes that come with making a design or an idea come to life, Makarova also teaches design and the skills of prototyping to others. One of the creative’s latest personal projects, the interior Flower Lamp series from the PLISSE collection caught our eye.

The design of these beautiful two-toned pleated lamps was inspired by nature, the images of wildflowers, blooming plants, meadows, gardens, landscapes, as well as still life paintings and artworks by great Russian painters. The geometric and dramatic silhouette of the lamps reminds us of dancing ballerinas while the pleated symmetry adds an idea of a continuum, like blossoming petals of a flower bud.

“The shape of the intense purple-colored Magento light is reminiscent of thistles, while their silhouettes can also be compared with cornflowers depicted in the still life of Isaac Levitan and with the abstract inflorescences found in graphics and iconic paintings by Mikhail Vrubel. Just like in the elongated shape of the Royal Blue ceiling lamp, a delphinium can be seen, or the blue flower in a vase from a painting by Igor Grabar”, Makarova writes of her inspiration that combines flowers and historical Russian artworks.
“The green Forest lamp refers to the color palette of Ivan Shishkin, to the fragrant and warm fields of poppy flowers, among which, through the sunlit meadows, the characters of portraits by Ilya Repin walk”, she continues. The Flower Lamp series is designed to serve as a single accent in an interior or like a bouquet, with numerous lamps assembled into a composition that fills a space and creates an image of a lush flowering garden. The collection has a variable size range, which includes different functional purposes: desktop, floor, and ceiling lamps, with both directional or diffused light. All the lamps are hand-assembled by the designer herself from a textured paper-based canvas and can be made in various shades.
