We’re looking forward to finding out what the new year will bring, but before diving head first into the future, let’s look into the crystal ball and have some fun making predictions on upcoming branding and packaging design trends we are expecting to see on the rise this year.
Retro nostalgia
Ironically, this trend is nothing new but actually takes us back to the past as brands are once again finding the strength that lies in nostalgia. Taking a trip down memory lane is becoming increasingly popular, and brands are combining retro typography and soft vintage color palettes with contemporary, minimal styles. It’s undoubtedly proven how combining nostalgia with the current styles creates engagement, yet it remains to be seen if this is a passing fab or a timeless trick in branding.
Illustrated mascots & brand characters
Illustrated mascots and brand-specific characters are all the rage right now, with playful illustrations popping up everywhere to add personality and character to an otherwise somewhat inhuman brand. Brands always aim to create a connection, even more growingly so in our fast-paced society, and what better way to do it than with something that brings a smile to your face? A tangible character is always more memorable and tangible than a simple logo, as it offers a way for the consumer to relate, and built and authentic relationship with the brand or product.
Shimmering jewel tones & holographic gradients
Holographics and gradients have been on the rise for some time now, but along with the growing y2K trend, they seem to be having their moment in everything from more watercolor’esc style patterns in packagings to foil print details on typographic logos. When done well the style can create a fresh, young vibe with a touch of elegance, something that is not so easily achieved.
Glowingly Bold Colors & Contrasts
This trend is all about grabbing your attention the first chance it gets and not letting it go. There’s nothing shy, demur, or bashful about the brands that choose to go all out on color and contrasts – no apologies, no hostages. Bold typography combined with strong, abstract patterns in a rainbow of colors, matched in the most contrasting ways, is the way for the bravest at the moment. Breaking every rule, matching pinks with reds, and neons with pastels, this is not for the faint of hearted, but for the ballsy go-getters the year 2023 most needs.
