Lyndi Sales’ Explosive Paper Sculptures Are Like Bursts Of Color And Form, Exploring Life’s Fragility

Cape Town-based artist Lyndi Sales creates stunningly impressive installations, made of numerous intricately cut, painted, and pinned paper strips or fragments of maps, plane tickets, etc. The works, which mimic the form of explosions or bursts of organic material suspended in time and space, explore the fragile nature of our existence, temporality, and how chance plays a role in our lives. In recent years Sales has been working on a series of installations and artworks that seek to investigate and explore specifically the circumstances surrounding the controversial Helderberg plane crash of 1987, in which the artist tragically lost her father.

The abstract compositions are a medley of colors and modular fans sprouting like mushrooms, corals, or ice crystals in nature – as unpredictably organic and erratic, yet powerful and unstoppable.

Sales’ large-scale installations are the artist’s own “way of locating herself in this universe”

Despite the heavy subject matter, as the artist uses her own intrigue and fascination with mortality, our transition from the physical to spiritual, and life’s vulnerability, Sales’ works are full of life, color, and energy. The abstract compositions are a medley of colors and modular fans sprouting like mushrooms, corals, or ice crystals in nature – as unpredictably organic and erratic, yet powerful and unstoppable. The tension of something temporary yet energetic being captured mid-movement is palpable and inspiring. Like life in its most simple forms, can not be stopped. Only studied and admired.

Sales’ next exhibition will take place at the Galerie Maria Lund in Paris (opening on the 11th of May), but you can also find a vast archive of her work on her site, and of course, follow her on Instagram for a behind-the-scenes look into the artist’s process and latest works.
