Goran Konjevod’s intricately fashioned origami artworks reveal a masterful fusion of precision and artistry. Through meticulous manipulation of paper, Konjevod breathes life into a diverse array of forms, ranging from vessels to abstract reliefs. Drawing upon his background in mathematics and computer science, the artist employs a keen understanding of structure and form to craft sculptures that are both technically precise and visually captivating.
Most of my pieces so far are abstract shapes naturally formed by the tension of the paper when multiple layers of paper are arranged according to regular or irregular patterns.
“Most of my pieces so far are abstract shapes naturally formed by the tension of the paper when multiple layers of paper are arranged according to regular or irregular patterns”, Konjevod writes about his creative work. “In that sense, they could almost be said to be discovered, rather than invented or designed. In particular, the pieces shown in my pleat tessellation gallery pages have been developed from a single urform discovered by Paul Jackson.”
Konjevod’s exploration of color, scale, form, and complexity knows no bounds as he experiments with various folding techniques
Lately, Konjevod has delved into a new method that allows him to create curves over pleated surfaces, a process that introduces a new level of fluidity and movement to his three-dimensional pieces. Despite the inherent challenges posed by the rigidity of paper, Konjevod’s innovative approach enables him to push the boundaries of traditional origami, resulting in sculptures that exude elegance and dynamism.
“I try to restrict myself to working with a single uncut sheet of paper or other foldable material, and for the most part use very simple “pureland” folds”, Konjevod explains. “Normally, this restriction would imply that the resulting forms are flat. However, a real sheet of paper is always three-dimensional—even when unfolded — and its thickness brings about a much more obvious three-dimensionality when multiple layers are present.”
Each of the creatives’ artwork stands as a testament to his meticulous attention to detail and his unwavering dedication to the craft of origami. From individual objects that showcase his prowess in miniature engineering to larger groupings that showcase the medium’s boundless potential, Konjevod’s work is a celebration of the infinite possibilities inherent in the art of paper folding.
