Universalmuseum Joanneum Magazine is far from the traditional museum or cultural institution publications we’re used to seeing. With white pages almost non-existent the magazine relies on a fresh color scheme not shying away from using pattern, large photographs and intriguing layouts and typography. Created by Eat Write Live, a Graz based travel writer duo dedicated to collecting good stories, writing them well and presenting them in a design that serves them best – did an excellent job designing the publication.
The Universalmuseum Joanneum is considered the biggest and oldest of its kind in Central Europe. The 4,5 million items in their collection form the basis of a richly faceted ‘universal’ exhibition and events schedule. A programme of exhibitions and events at twelve locations throughout Styria transmit a unique panorama of science, art and culture. With such a rich collection, you need to keep a clear overview while presenting all the different exhibitions and events from various themes and topics. So every year, the Universalmuseum Joanneum releases an overview for their programme which has previously been created in the classic form of a brochure listing all the exhibitions and occurances. But this year is different. They decided to collaborate with the travel guide author and creative duo Vera Bachernegg & Katharina M. Zimmermann – Eat Write Live. Who then embarked on a journey through all the sites to discover the Universalmuseum Joanneum through the eyes of a visitor. The curiosity of someone seeing all these wildly different exhibits is the red thread in both the text as well as the design. So for both visitors and the museum itself, the magazine holds a variety of different worlds, tiny details and great care for its subjects to help you find your way through everything they have to offer.
