The actual tea plantations in China were the source of inspiration for the packaging design for the eco-friendly Chatu tea packaging by graphic designer Xenia Alexandrova. “The unique round shape of the packaging is embossed with the terrain of the tea plantantions, while also resembling the patterns on the hands of tea pickers”, writes the designer. The unique concept has been awarded with the Silver Pentawards in 2021, Sreda Bronze Winner, the Dieline Awards 2022 winner, as well as the World brand Design Society Gold in the past year.
A design inspired by the tea plantations and traditional chinese tea pots, created with natural died paper pulp, making the packaging eco-friendly
Chatu is a premium Chinese tea collected in Sichuan, Henan, and Fujian provinces. The texture of the package repeats the shape of the plantation on which the tea is harvested, and it matches each of the three types of tea – white, green, and red. The molded pulp packaging is dyed with natural dyes in red, dark green, and light green tones, and shaped to resemble traditional Chinese teapots. Tea leaves are packed in two-layered cotton bags, while the packaging is designed to be breathable and as environmentally friendly as possible.

The Chatu tea packaging is a delight to the eyes as well as to all tea drinkers. It’s always inspiring to see designers creating a new, unique variation packaging, especially for the product or commodity as traditional as tea – proving that not everything already made, and there’s still new fresh ideas to be discovered. We’re keeping a keen eye on Alexandrova’s Instagram for future project, and how far the Chatu tea packaging will go.
