These paper cut works by artist Maude White make my wrists hurt just by looking at them. The new queen of paper cut art has been gaining great recognition among paper art enthusiast in social media, especially on Instagram. And to no one’s surprise, as the time and effort that must have gone into making any of these designs is mind-boggling and very impressive.
I’ve lately been spending more time on Instagram after discovering it’s great potential for discovering new talent, artists from around the world and see works you might never find another vice. Many artists and designers are using more and more social media to showcase their works, gaining a wider audience. One of my more recent finds is the talented Maude White from Buffalo, NY.
Her approach to paper cutting art goes deeper than the beautiful visual effect, “I want my art to communicate to the observer what my words cannot do effectively. Very rarely do we rely on words alone. It is what we see, and how our brains interpret what we see that shapes our perceptions and actions. I began cutting paper with that understanding. “, she explains.
Her works deal with the idea of hidden spaces – when she cuts paper she peels back the outer, superficial layer of our vision and reveals the secret space beneath. Her play with negative space, contrasts, shadows and the three dimensional makes the pieces multi-layered and more interesting for the observer. The artist has great respect for paper, and vice versa, the paper shows it’s strengths to her. To keep up to date on her current work, follow the artists on Instagram here, and why not check out ours as well.
