Paper Sculpture Orpheus by Aivaras Ligeika Explores The Relationship Between Human And Matter

Lithuanian Aivaras Ligeika is an independent visual artist, a curious mind, and a member of the contemporary art movement. In a constant endeavor to fuse art and technology, Ligeika dedicates his time to animation, film, design, and installation art fields. For his latest installation, Ligeika hand-cut over 350 pieces of paper that together sculpt a mysterious piece of landscape. Titled Orpheus, the installation feels fluid and stagnant at once, like a growing organic thing frozen in time. Born from Ligeika’s desire to find a bodily form reflecting the image of human thought, the fragility of a moment is beautifully captured in its multilayered nature.

The impressive paper sculpture can be enjoyed during both light and dark, as a custom-made glass showcase with a light installed in the base gently illuminates the piece at night-time, creating a unique experience for the observer. See the video below.

In his work, Ligeika explores the relationship between a human and matter, and his desire to form the environment reflecting the image of a thought. In Orpheus, “hundreds of illusions cut from sheets of paper create a harmonious, sculptural object reminiscent of a mute symphony of dreams and ideas. The unsustainable matter embodies the fragility of the moment of the life of thoughts”, Ligeika writes. The scale, visible structure of the material, and the sculpture’s abstract form and fluidity create a stunning experience.
