Two talented Graz, Austria-based graphic designers – Simone Jauk & Stefanie Theres Zimmermann – were tasked with the meaningful assignment of bringing the visual identity of a local landmark to the 21st century. Jauk (who we’ve featured before here) joined forces with Zimmermann to create a delicious concept that honors both the history and atmosphere of the Delikatessen Frankowitsch, which originally opened its doors back in 1932 and has since become known for their legendary bread rolls, amazing “Belegte Brote” (traditional Austrian open-face sandwiches), selection of delicacies from around the world, and the finest desserts in town.
“Watch, gossip, make a little mess, and spy on what’s on the neighbor’s plate. And simply enjoy.”
The traditional Austrian delicacy has become a beloved landmark among locals and visitors alike and often serves as the meeting point between friends, families, and even strangers, as it’s known that “Frankowitsch means eating and drinking. Shopping and celebrating. Watch, gossip, make a little mess, and spy on what’s on the neighbor’s plate. And simply enjoy.”
…a delightful concept was born that not only suits the legendary delicatessen’s style but has transformed the cityscape, as now you can see many “Graz’iens” walking through the city with the colorfully striped Frankowitsch packages.
Jauk and Zimmermann believed the new, refreshed branding should go hand in hand with the rest of the lifestyle Frankowitsch is known for, while honoring the “institutional” status of the place. So a delightful concept was born that not only suits the legendary delicatessen’s style but has transformed the cityscape, as now you can see many “Graz’iens” walking through the city with the colorfully striped Frankowitsch packages.
The inspiration for the charming identity concept came from the idea of traditional hat boxes. “In general, we went back to the origins. The lettering is based on the logo lettering above the facade of the store, and all the colors, shapes, and selected fonts are reminiscent of the 1930s”, the designers write. The cohesive identity design is a successful combination of traditional and contemporary, making it a perfect fit for Frabkowitsch, and its next decades serving delicacies and experiences to the lucky Graz citizens.
