The third edition of Arctic Paper’s Surface campaign was launched with a much needed topic – HOPE. After three years of pandemic, followed by economic crisis, the great resignation, climate change, wars, it sometimes seems like we’re drowning in a sea of negativity and bad news. This is why I commend our partners at Arctic Paper for the chosen theme, as we could all benefit from a spoonful of HOPE – just what the doctor ordered!
This incredibly well-made book introduces you to individuals who are true experts in hope. They don’t dwell on despair. Even amidst global crises, they channel their energy and spirit into projects aimed at creating a more sustainable, fairer, beautiful, and diverse civilization.
Flipping through the beautifully printed and finished pages, you’ll be introduced to architects, designers, artists, chefs, collectors, photographers, engineers, producers, and graphic designers—people who embody change in everything they do. The numerous examples gathered in this book offer a wide-ranging view of hopeful optimism. Let their stories of hope move and inspire you.
Printing, Finishing & Certificates
Surface N° 3 is printed on a variety of different paper types from the arctic Design Range: Arctic Volume White 300 g/m2 for the cover and two shades splitting the core equally: Arctic Volume White and Ice 130 g/m2. Printed in offset, with separate varnish on images.
The Arctic Volume Design range offers matt, coated papers of high bulk and a natural feel, particularly suited for high-quality printing projects that require a special touch.
What’s important to highlight is that Paper, ink, varnish and printing are Cradle to Cradle Certified® Silver. This attests a product is designed so that its materials and components can be repurposed- or recycled indefinitely. This makes products “circular” and reduces their environmental impacts.
Let’s dive deeper into HOPE
The book also features beautiful photo spreads showcasing a variety of inspiring projects. These include elegantly designed wind turbines created by ECAL students in Lausanne, the innovative Paper House by Thomas Demand and Caruso St John, and Liljewall’s breathtaking educational architecture in Sweden.
It highlights the culinary artistry of vegan Michelin-starred chef Zizi Hattab and the eco-friendly fashion label Martan, which transforms hotel waste textiles into stylish clothing. Additionally, the works of jewelry designer Alec Doherty, painter Logan T. Sibrel, and photographer Laurence Kubski celebrate diverse perspectives.
Last but not least, the final section on ‘Hope’ explores the promising impact of AI on design, and the Curator’s Pick showcases remarkable products that creatively address the urgent need for sustainable consumer choices.
Spanning over 336 pages, HOPE will take your breath away with its beauty and clean design, and fill your heart with the idea that anything is possible. As long as we don’t give up, we can make the world a better place.
