The French design duo Zim&Zou, known for their colorful paper designs, have ventured into the world of typography. Staying faithful for their innovative style, they’ve come up with something original and technically challenging. In Weave Type2 each letter took about 6 hours to finish, and altogether over 500 meters of tread was used for the project.
Weave Type2 is a handmade font made with thread and paper, and the second version Zim&Zou has made with a similar weaving technique. The first was a more simple one, with the thread stretched between a few key points in each letter, creating a softer, rounder shape. Type2 is more of a pattern, being more creative with the technique, chosen colors as well as the design.
The white-blue-orange combo on a black background makes a stunning contrast, and how the letters are build from multiple small “fanned out” lines of a tread is interesting. You can see the clever method the design duo used in the process in the video in the end of the post. The shiny thread against the black paper reminds of rays of light, making this on of my favorite typographic design I’ve yet come across. What do you think?
