Zara Picken Blurs The Line Between Digital And Analog Paper-Cut Illustration

Zara Picken is an illustrator based in Lincoln, UK, who creates digital illustrations inspired by the unique style of paper-cut art. Since graduating from the University of the West of England in Bristol in 2008, Picken has been working with a diverse range of international clients, including the likes of The Boston Globe, BBC, Wired, Lonely Planet, and many many more. Besides creating commercial illustrations for editorial, publishing, and advertising, in her spare time, she works on her illustration history research project Ephemerama! (an archive of print c.1950-1975.)

Blurring the line between computer and paper-cut art, Zara works digitally to deliver concise concepts with strong visual impact

Picken’s bold style incorporates vibrant colors, geometric forms, and subtle paper texture. Creating a digital version of the recognizable paper-cut style, including sharp edges, layered pieces, strong color-blocking, and subtle play on shadow and light, her work feels rich and more tactile than traditional digital illustrations.

Creating a digital version of the recognizable paper-cut style, including sharp edges, layered pieces, strong color-blocking, and subtle play on shadow and light, her work feels rich and more tactile than traditional digital illustrations.

She enjoys playing with highlights and shadows to create her striking layered compositions. Blurring the line between computer and paper-cut art, Zara works digitally to deliver concise concepts with strong visual impact. Her work often incorporates a humorous side, something clever, as visual cues and context are the keys to a well-executed concept. Most importantly it feels fresh and new, and while illustration may be considered as one of the oldest forms of communication – Picken’s work feels more timeless and fun.
